About
The Gulf Region Advocacy Center, “GRACE”, is an independent, non-governmental, client-centered charity based in Houston, Texas that provides and supports high quality representation of indigent defendants facing the death penalty at trial or retrial. Since 2002, GRACE has been on the cutting edge of innovative and lasting reforms to ensure fairness in the administration of capital punishment. Our mission is to bring the methods of capital representation that have been successful elsewhere to bear in jurisdictions where lack of resources and/or entrenched legal cultures have prevented implementation of best practices. We accomplish this through four program areas: 1) donor-funded direct legal representation of capital defendants in the 13 Texas counties without capital public defenders (which are the most lethal jurisdictions in America); 2) court appointed mitigation services in state and federal courts around the U.S.; 3) intensive, case-specific consulting in the highest-volume U.S. jurisdictions; 4) public education and defender training.
